Afrox infrastructure
With a very wide customer base, the Afrox business operates on an impressive
plant, manufacturing and branch infrastructure. The company has branches
in South Africa and in 15 other African countries, a logistics and distribution
fleet as well as a significant distributor network and the largest population
of gas cylinders in circulation in sub-Saharan Africa.
Bulk and Tonnage
Afrox’s Bulk and Tonnage business boasts a sophisticated
infrastructure in sub-Saharan Africa from which customers are serviced with
large volumes
of gases. Afrox supplies its customers by bulk road tankers, pipeline, or
gas producing pressure swing absorption (PSA) plants. The main products supplied
are oxygen, nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide and hydrogen by means of 11 strategically-sited
plants in southern Africa and over 20 gas producing PSAs, mainly sited on
customer premises.
Packaged Gas and Products
In South Africa, the PGP business supplies industrial and medical of gases,
special gases and food-grade mixtures as well as propellants and refrigerant
gases delivered to customers in bulk, mini-bulk or in cylinders of several
sizes. Medical oxygen and other medical grade gases are supplied to the
healthcare sector for use in public and private hospitals, general practitioners’ surgeries
and the homecare market.
Afrox Safety offers a head-to-toe range of personal protective equipment,
keeping people safe in their work environment. This includes the provision
of self-contained, light-weight, self-rescue apparatus, which allow miners,
in particular, to escape hazardous conditions and events.
Afrox also manufactures and markets a wide range of welding, cutting and
safety products, offering many thousands of different items. Its welding
and cutting products have also secured a significant market position in Australia
and New Zealand and are also being sold into many other countries in South
East Asia, Europe and South America.
LPG (Handigas)
Afrox pioneered the LPG business in South Africa in the early 1950s when
it imported LPG in cylinders from the UK. Development of the Afrox infrastructure
in the 1980s was synonymous with the growth of LPG in the Afrox portfolio,
which was boosted by the acquisition of two existing large-scale LPG businesses
in South Africa in the early 1990s, followed by other distributor operators
in Botswana and Mozambique and the introduction of a hospitality packaged
gases service to the restaurant, pub and entertainment industries.
Today, the Handigas brand is the largest selling brand of LPG in southern
Africa and has a significant and growing presence in the company’s
sub-Saharan operations.
Engineering Services
Afrox's Customer Engineering Services (CES) specialises in tailor-made Turnkey
Gas Reticulation systems and other piped services. CES approaches projects
on a partnership basis with our customers. For the duration of the project,
the team becomes an extension of the customer's organisation, as CES co-ordinates
project development from the conceptual stage right through to commissioning
support and handover, including process development, troubleshooting, management
services and telemetry/remote monitoring of the customer process. The CES
team's engineering skills play a major role in the customer's project team.
These skills and high standards have enabled Afrox to position its self
and a supplier of choice in the large and medium on site industrial and
commercial bulk gas markets.
